Kedarkantha Trek Best time:

Kedarkantha trek is one of the few treks in the Indian Himalayas where you can trek for most part of the year.  Kedarkantha trek is accessible for 10 months of the year except July and August (the peak rainy months in Uttarakhand).

The 10 months cover four different seasons –

The great thing about Kedarkantha is that it is suitable for first-time trekkers. If you're a beginner and have yet to experience trekking in the snow, you should go on Kedarkantha trek in December. However, winters can be harsh, so you should be well prepared for this expedition.

It's a little hard to travel with kids. We just did chardham yatra last week and we saw quite a few families with young kids. ... You can hire a palki for the kids since it's not safe for such young kids to sit on a pony. Kedarnath is the toughest with a trek of 18kms.

Winter – December to February

Spring – March and April

Summer – May and June
Autumn –
Mid September to November

Each of these seasons have something very different to offer in terms of terrain, difficulty and weather.

In a nutshell, let me tell you about the subtle differences you will see in the different seasons of the year. This should help you plan your trek better.

Kedarkantha (not to be confused with the popular Temple Kedarnath) is a 6-day long trek in Govind Ballabh National Park in Uttarakhand (6 when including the travel days from Dehradun to the base camp and back)

Kedarkantha temperature during winter ranges from 13-18 degree Celcius during the day to as low as -7 degree Celcius during the night.

Kedarkantha trek difficulty level is easy to moderate, with gradual ascends and descends. Only the uphill climb from Kedarkantha base camp can be a little strenuous. Kedarkantha is famous for being a winter trek. But, you have to keep in mind that winters can be harsh.

A normal person takes around 07 hrs to reach Kedarnath from Gaurikund. After the June '13 disaster, lots of people think that trekking on the Kedarnath route is very risky and unsafe. But this is untrue, the trek has become safer now. It is as safe as the trek to Vaishnodevi.
